 Hi all,
I spent this morning in Mt Disappointment State Forest, just north of Melbourne on the Great Dividing Range. The south side tends to have wet and tall forest with Mountain Ash while the north side is more drier and open with Peppermints and Messmate.
Along Main Mountain Road I saw a Bassian Thrush and a small flock of Flame Robins. They probably breed up here in summer (794 metres). Stopped for lunch at Strath Creek Falls where a big surprise was a Red-capped Robin. White-throated Needletails soared overheard. Under a rock overhang near the falls a female Peregrine Falcon roosted. The amount of whitewash on the rocks suggests this may be a nesting site. Further down the mountain stopped at Upper King Parrot Creek where a Rufous Fantail was seen and a Yellow-faced Honeyeater was feeding a nestling, still breeding in February! Other bush birds had begun to form mixed feeding flocks such as the Brown Thornbills, White-naped Honeyeaters and Silvereyes working along the creek.
