Dear All,

Visited Wonthaggi Heathlands and Phillip Island (south central Victoria, ~120 km south east of Melbourne)early last week. The Wonthaggi Heathlands are a reserve of approximately 800 Ha directly behind sand dunes on the coast. Unfortunately little is left of this vegetation in this area. The weather was very average but birding was quite reasonable. Highlight was a Magpie Goose on Baxter's Wetland just to the north of the Heathlands, along with Blue-billed Duck, Hardhead and Hoary-headed Grebe amongst others. Within the Heathlands Beautiful Firetail and recent signs of Emus were worthy of note. Phillip Island was also productive, although a decent scope would have been useful at Observation Point. Highlights from the Island were Cape Barren Goose, a Swamp Harrier feasting on a dead Shearwater, Hooded Plover and a lone Kelp Gull amongst the Pacifics (I thought Kelp Gull was supposed to be increasing in Victoria?). Masked Lapwings and Silvereyes seemed to be overabundant on Phillip Island as did Rabbits. Full list below.

Cheers
