Norway has some far-flung possesiions in the Antarctic, i.e. Peter the
Island and Bouvet island, as well as laying claim to a chunk of the
Antarctic continent Nobody here would dream of putting birds seen there on
their Norwegian list (not that many people actually visit those islands).
The case of Jan Mayen, an island midways between Iceland and Greenland, is
somewhat more equivocal and probably more comparable to your Christmas
Island; but I am unaware of any bird species actually seen there which have
not also been observed in Norway or on Svalbard.

PS Many thanks for good advice concerning my forthcoming New Zealand visit!
