This may relate to having two birds with the same common name.  Most Americans and Europeans would associate the Broad-billed Roller with the African species:

Broad-billed Roller, Eurystomus glaucurus

In the old days one can see such common names as African Broad-billed Roller and Eastern Broad-billed Roller to differentiate the two, but the name “Dollarbird” is more colourful and efficient in phrase.  Anyway as the “dollar” supposedly refers to US silver dollar, then this would possibly have been an American-driven designation to separate the two.
