A question for list members.
I am interested in hearing of people's experiences with the spread of
Pittosporum undulatum (Sweet Pittosporum) and the role the introduced
European Blackbird (Turdus merula) has in this spread within Victoria.
The spread of P. undulatum is a recognised threatening process in Victoria
under the Flora and Fauna Guarantee Act. Blackbirds were identified as
having a major role in this spread.
As birdos may know, the spread of Blackbirds continues in eastern Australia
(highlighted by the Birds Australia atlases) and the Western Australia
Department of Agriculture is trying to keep them out of that state.
What I would like to know from list members is
- are there many localities where Blackbirds occur in southern Victoria and
Sweet Pittosporum does NOT?
- are there localities where Sweet Pittosporum has invaded after the
arrival of Blackbirds
