Saturday 18.12.04. Expecting hot weather Robert D and I made as early a
start as we thought viable ? 5.45 - and headed up to Mt Cotton, south
side Brisbane, approx 30 (?) kms from the CBD as the crow files. A stop
at the rainforest in the gully and a walk through the Venman Bush area
revealed 27 species, most expected, but we did have great views of a
white phase Grey Goshawk sitting and a good sighting of a Hobby in
flight. In the carpark of the bush walk a Channel-billed Cuckoo posed
for photos in a low tree eyeing us from his red eye behind that
pterodactyl-like bill. I think these birds are just unreal! A couple of
close Cicadabirds were an additional bonus and over the cutting for the
powerlines ? a flock of 15 or so White-throated Needletails circled in
the haze.
On to Point Halloran reserve (Thornlands, southern Moreton Bay coast)
followed by a brief visit to the esplanade at Victoria pt and Brahminy
Kite, White-bellied Sea Eagle and Brown Goshawk added to a good raptor
total for the day. We also had 2 Brown Thornbills in the car park of the
reserve, which was interesting. We don?t often see these guys so close
to the city. Finally, we counted approx 30 Golden Plover scattered
across the mudflats as the tide dropped and the heat shimmered.
Headed out of there by 10.00 ? dam the heat and humidity!
