Tom,
Get in the queue mate, locals first! Seriously, haven't heard of a
Black Bittern on the Sunshine Coast for a long, long time. We're happy enough
with Green Pgymy-Goose for the moment.
Sunshine Coast birders put 7 teams into the field last Sunday for
the BOCA Bird Challenge. Spoke with our co-ordinator yesterday who informs
with results from all but one team in, the total exceeds 180 species. He
didn't mention a bittern . Our team covered the southern Blackall Range
(Baroon Pocket dam, Mary Cairncross Park), Landsborough area (Ewen Maddock
Dam), and the Caloundra sandbanks at Golden Beach.
Our best birds were Russet-tailed Thrush, nesting Black-faced
Monarch, Grey Goshawk, and Paradise Riflebird. We got 101 species in a
relaxed manner in less than ideal circumstances. Had a great fun day with
some members of our team geting new birds, always an exciting event.
