TRIP REPORT ? sw WA
I recently had a fantastic trip to Christmas Island with Mike Carter and 9
other intrepid birders. We left Perth on 22/11/04 and returned on 29/11/04.
Refer to Mike?s report on this trip.
My partner and I extended our trip to WA with a 6 day round trip from Perth
to the sw, from 16 ? 21/11/04, to pick up the subspecies missed on our 2002
trip to WA. We stayed at Cheynes Beach CP, Stirling Ranges Retreat(2
nights), Dryandra Village and Brookton.
We also had 2 days on Rottnest Island, 30/11 -1/12/04, as we had not
visited this island previously.
The emphasis on these trips was to find the targets and other sightings
were incidental to this.128 species were recorded, the more significant of
these are as follows-
Targets seen were-
Pheasant, Common-30/11- Rottnest Island ? Thomsons Bay.
Corella, Western (pastinator)-16/11-Kojonup/Frankland Rd- 0.5k w of
Frankland River Bridge
Rosella, Western (xanthogenys)-21/11- Collins Rd ? 50k w of Brookton.
Fieldwren, Western (montanellus)-17/11- Mt Trio Rd ? Stirling Ranges
Miner, Yellow-throated (obscura)-19/11- Alemup ? north of the Stirling Ranges
Honeyeater, White-naped (chloropsis)? Seen at Gleneagle, Porongurups,
Stirling Ranges and Dryandra. All birds closely inspected and all had white
eye-skin (Pizzey and Morcombe both describe race whitlocki with white
eye-skin in coastal areas and race chloropsis with pale green eye-skin in
dryer areas. Schodde & Mason and Simpson and Day (Ed.7) don?t mention
whitlocki. S&M describes chloropsis as having bluish cream eye-skin and S&D
describes chlorosis as having white eye-skin but the plate indicates pale
green. From all this confusion I?ve decided to tick chloropsis at Dryandra
as this is definitely not coastal, (whitlocki was ticked at Waychinicup in
2002).
Robin, Western Yellow (griseogularis)-18/11-Paper Collar Creek & breeding @
White Gums Flat - Stirling Ranges. (also @ Dryandra & Collins Rd)
Whipbird, Western (nigrogularis)-17/11 @ 5.15am ?Cheynes Beach-on ridge
100m to left (towards beach) of Bald Island track 250m beyond end of bitumen.
Also heard at other locations at Cheynes Beach and Talyuberlup Car Park at
Stirling Ranges
Shrike-tit, Crested (Western) (leucogaster)-19/11- Marri Rd 200m n of
Tomingly Rd. Dryandra
Pipit, Australian (bilbali)-19/11- Harvested field w of Stirling Ranges
Retreat.

Tattler, Grey-tailed - Mable Cove, Rottnest Is
Button-quail, Painted ? Block n of Stirling Ranges Retreat
Kite, Square-tailed ? White Gum Flat Carpark in Stirling ranges
