There are always local ones (about 100 or so) around the Shortland WC
and Newcastle Wetlands Reserve at Sandgate in suburban Newcastle with
occasional sightings in other parts of the Hunter (I have seen a few at
Seaham and Taree for example in recent years).
>From what I have heard the Newcastle birds are said to be a mixture of
both wild (birds that have come in from further north long time ago)and
introduced stock (some bred from VIC) but all breed freely in the area.
I have seen Magpie Goose goslings at least twice at the Newcastle
Wetlands Reserve.

Hi all,
this morning a collegue saw at least 4 Magpie Geese at the
large wetlands immediately west of Pacific Hwy (Maitland Road), north of
the Sandgate Cemetery, Newcastle. Can anyone from the the Hunter Bird
Observers club, or other local birdos let me know whether these birds
are regularly seen throughout the Hunter region? I will see if l can
find the Painted Snipe this afternoon at Ash Island.
