Biridng-Aus readers who know Dr Janet Kear will be saddened to hear
that she lost her battle with illness a few days ago. Thank you to
Denise Goodfellow for passing on the following information:

Dr. Janet Kear died a few days ago (on the 25th)

Dr Kear was a woman of vast intelligence who made a huge contribution to the field of ornithology  (She was Director of Centres for The Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust, author of several bird books, eg Ducks of The World; Wildfowl (with Eric Hosking), Flamingos (with Nicole Duplaix).  She contributed to several others by authors such as Sir Peter Scott.  She was also editor of The Ibis.

Janet was a role model demonstrating that fame didn't need to go hand in hand with arrogance.  She showed great kindness, generosity of spirit and humour. The latter I first learned about the day, some time after I requested information on bird sex for  my book 'Birds of Australia's Top End',  she sent me information in an email entitled 'Ruddy Ducks' Dicks'!  She'll be missed greatly.

 Kind regards
 Denise
