A RAMSAR listed wetland near St Leonards on the Bellerine Pensinsula called Salt Lagoon, is under considerable threat from possible residential development.

59 acres of beach front land is currently for sale by a local real estate agent, and the sign is located in front of a flourishing section of Salt marsh that has recently been filled by good local rains.  The wetland that appears to be included in the sale, and will most likely undergo drainage works and clearing of significant vegetation, currently holds large numbers of black winged stilts, shelducks, sharp tailed sandpipers, red necked stints, greenshanks, curlew sandpipers, and couple of godwits.

I'm unable to ascertain whether the section for sale is included in the RAMSAR agreements, but if not, it probably should be.

If anyone could point me in the right direction for contacts and documents that could support  and confirm these agreements, i'd be very appreciative. ( as would many migratory waders).

Cheers,

Peter
