Hi folks,
The lagoon on the Half Moon Bay Golf course (Wattle Street) at Yorkeys Knob,
13.5km NW of Cairns is well worth a visit. In the past Darters, Little Pied
and Little Black Cormorants, Bush Stone-curlew and various small honeyeaters
have bred on the island in the middle. A visit today, Sunday 21st Nov., to
follow up a reported Barn Swallow and Yellow Wagtail there last week
produced 3 Barn Swallows (I have seen the odd one here in previous years),
but no Yellow Wagtail. In all 26 species were recorded in 20mins, including
Sharp-tailed Sandpiper, Red-necked Stint and one Marsh Sandpiper which were
present due to the low water level. There was also the usual pairs of Green
Pygmy-goose plus Plumed Whistling-Duck, Pacific Black Duck, Aust.Grebe and
Buff-banded Rail.
Unfortunately the Golf Club has a permit to fill in part of the lagoon and
join the mainland with the island despite local birdos and residents
objecting to it. Hopefully the 120+ species recorded here will remain.

Cheers,
Keith & Lindsay Fisher
Cairns, QLD
