Went to Barren Grounds (NSW) yesterday. Got up Very early in order to arrive sometime around 6am. Went to a firetrail in Budderoo NP first but no Ground Parrot. Time was limiting so I went back to Barren Grounds. Heard Brush Bronzewing when I got out from the car. A walk down the trail off from the sleeping quarters did not produce a Ground Parrot, but considering only two were seen at the last survey, I'd be extremely lucky if I did. Did see Rufous Whistler, Grey Shrike-thrush, Southern Emu-wren, Brown Thornbill and heard what proved to be Eastern Bristlebirds. Walking half an hour up the Griffith Trail from the sleeping quarters produced more Eastern Bristlebirds (heard), and more of the same.

Walked down the Griffith Trail and popped in to the Illawarra lookout and saw Rock Warbler here. By now it wasn't just cold, but very windy and occasionally drizzling. Saw an Eastern Bristlebird (proved to be the only one I actually saw but at least I knew I had heard Bristlebirds earlier) just 20m past the lookout turnoff, and I was given nice views as it crossed the main track. Further along the main track revealed Grey Warblers, White-browed Scrub-wrens, Brown Thornbills, Eastern Whipbird, Crimson Rosellas and a lone female Gang-gang Cockatoo. Heard quite a few things, some of which I didn't recognize.

A walk down to the buildings near the road didn't produce Pilotbirds but a Brown Cuckoo-dove flew overhead. It was then an early departure (9:15am) back to Sydney. A nice morning if somewhat rushed and suboptimal weather (it was amazing how relatively warm, cloudless and still it later became).

Thanks to all those who gave me advice. Cheers.

Frank
