A friend who is mildly interested in birds asked me this morning: 'How long
do magpies live?'

I had to admit that I really had no idea.

Her comment was that she and her husband had been occasionally feeding the
same bird for about 12 years. She added that this individual (a female) had,
on occasions, followed them into their house.

How long do magpies normally live, on average?
