Hi Birders,

A friend of mind, Janene Luff, was in north-west Victoria on 15 August 2004 and while travelling along the Yanak-Nhill Rd, near Hardys Swamp Reserve, saw a kite hovering over the grass which appeared to have black markings under the wing. She stopped the vehicle and the Kite flew to a telegraph pole where it sat for a while. She got out her scope and had clear views of a Black-shouldered Kite type bird which appeared to have larger eyes. Eventually the Kite flew off and began to hover again and so the black lines on the underwings in the typical "W" black across the underside of the wings was clearly seen. She had not seen a Letter-winged Kite before and was very excited! The Kite dropped to the ground and caught something in the grass and fed there for a while before moving off.

If any one else is in the area Janene would be interested to hear if this bird has been subsequently seen again or of any other Letter-winged Kites that  have been seen in the general area.
