Hello Birding-Aus,

I am an American student who is spending the semester at James Cook University in Cairns (semester ends early December).  As I am without transport, I was wondering if anyone would allow me to tag along on whatever birding outings bring them near the Uni, whether they're to the esplanade, the tableland, the reef, or farther.  Of course I am happy to contribute to fuel expenses, etc.  I also brought along my scope.

I sent out an RFI a while back regarding relevant field guides and site guides.  I got a bunch of great responses; thank you!

I am currently looking into joining the Cairns branch of the Bird Observers Club, which should prove useful during my stay.  Does anyone have any other suggestions on how to get out birding in the area?

I have done a bit of birding since I've been in town: had a Little Kingfisher and Pacific Baza at the Botanic Gardens on the 2nd, and a Double-eyed Fig-Parrot at the Esplanade today the 4th.  I'm not quite sure what is worthy of reporting around here yet, but I'll do my best.

I also wanted to give much thanks to Dave Torr and Anthea Fleming in the Melbourne area for showing me some good birds with great company!

Also, a bit off topic...but if anyone knows of the best butterfly or dragonfly guides on the market, I'd love to hear about those too.

I'm really looking forward to spending the coming months here!

Thanks in advance,

Nick Bonomo
