Gooday Val and others,
Because of protected zones on the Great Barrier Reef in the area that you
are visiting it is highly recommended that you visit the Great Barrier Reef
Marine Park Authority at
http://www.gbrmpa.gov.au/

They will be able to provide up to date information on visiting any islands.
Some islands are totally protected with no visits allowed.
Bowen has a few Beach Stone Curlews.
Visit the Bowen Shire Council birds website for more info at
 www.bowen.qld.gov.au/webs/birds.htm

The local Bowen Tourist Guide also has a section on birds but is now only
restricted to the Birds of Mullers Lagoon. I will be away over the next few
months so will be unable to assist during your visit.
Good luck with you trip, glorious up here at present.
Ocean Rafting does a good tour around the islands for approx. $100 you have
a top day out that includes lunch on Whitehaven Beach and may also include a
thick knee.
