While with the "Farewell to the Waders" group at Broome Bird Observatory a few years ago we all saw saw a Whimbrel doing the same thing, lying on its back, legs up in the air and being "attacked" by two other Whimbrels. This went on for some minutes and was repeated several times. It appeared to be at the edge of two territories.
