I must note that have heard all sorts of non-nocturnal birds call at
night - various Honeyeaters, Silver Gulls, Galahs and Blackbird. Some of
these were calling as they flew overhead - 2 or more hours after dark.
Anything is possible if the bird has been disturbed.

6.15pm (here in the Blue Mountains the sun is currently setting
around 5.00pm). To my mind this would make it unlikely to have been a
lyrebird, bowerbird or Common Blackbird, whereas Koels are well-known
for calling at night. I wonder if other correspondents took this into
account.
