Last Saturday (24 April) I did a recce around Banyule Flats Reserve in
preparation for a BAYBOCA outing this coming Saturday. Although the day
was rather cold, overcast and windy, I still managed 42 species. A big
surprise was an immature Olive-backed Oriole in the trees near the Yarra
Rriver as I thought it should have left for warmer areas by now. There
appeared to be plenty of water in the billabong but the number of water
birds was down, with only a pair of Black Swan, half a dozen Pacific
Black Ducks, a single Australasian Shoveler, four Chestnut Teal, an
Australasian Grebe and several Eurasian Coot, Duskt Moorhen and Purple
Swamphen. On a grassy island were about a dozen Cattle Egret. The
former Painted Snipe area only had a pair of Chestnut Teal.

Regards,

Tania
