Hi Chris,
You asked for any ideas, so here it goes. Could the duck have been a
Freckled Duck, it meets the following criteria in your friend's description:
- basically a grey bird
- bigger than a Black Duck
- dark eye
- black on top of the head (well the head of Freckled Duck in general is
darker grey approaching blackish)
- underside is whitish (Freckled Duck has a large whitish patch on the
abdomen - not sure about the creamy/gold description though)
- short tail
- shortish legs
- perches in trees
- is likely to be a rare visitor to Central Victoria
- NOT a Cape Barren Goose :-)
What doesn't fit is the 10" long goose-like neck, this would be too long I'd
imagine (however, I was never not metric!) for a Freckled Duck, and whether
it is goose-like is subjective.
