The Wedge-tailed
Eagle is common and doing extremely well in Canberra (the best place to be). It
is nice but not unexpected to observe them over the suburbs or city. This is
shown both by results of COG's Garden Bird Survey over the period from 1981 to
2002 (as in my report on it * ) and by a great presentation to the Aust.
Ornithological Conference last December and talk to COG last month by Estaban
Fuentes from Canberra University. This indicates that the number of Wedge-tailed Eagles breeding within the Canberra region
(mostly in reserves just outside the suburbs), has increased markedly since 1970
and they are exploiting a wide and increasing range of food sources. Apparently
their population density here compares favourably to any other known population
of an Aquila.

This morning coming to work I
noticed a Wedgie flying over Sturt CP close
to Flinders University here
in Adelaide.
Has anyone seen them flying over the CBD in
their state ? How close
do they venture towards the
various capital cities in Australia ?.
Flinders is about 20 ks out from
the
city.
