In response to Rob Farnes comments about observing Cape Gannets at Point
Danger in Victoria (Birding-aus 19 Feb. '04), I have the following
information for the list.
The area is a sensitive one for gannets in the state and there are a few
points visitors need to note (some of which Rob mentioned in his email)
- The Australasian Gannet and Cape Gannet colony at Point Danger near
Portland is an important breeding area for these species in Australia
- In Victoria Cape Gannets are now only recorded from this locality. There
have been no recent records of Cape Gannet from Port Phillip Bay.
- Point Danger is the largest breeding colony for the Australasian Gannet
in Victoria
- There is no open access to the actual nesting area used by these species
and the site is not accessable to the general public other than from a
viewing platform constructed for this purpose.
- Note, however, that certain special interest groups can be catered for
should more specific access be required. Interested parties need to contact
the local Department of Sustainability & Environment offices at Portland.

Sustainability & Environment Flora and Fauna Management Officer (55223440).
I encourage all birdos to contact Mr Govanstone should they wish to see the
colony in any detail
