G'day all

Made some inquiries about Birds Australia's position on the Port Botany
container terminal expansion which will enclose Penrhyn Estuary and Botany
Beach.

This was Phil Straw's response.

Hi Ken, Mike and Mark,

The NSW Wader Study Group will be making a submission soon and sending dot

points to other bird clubs and individuals in case they would like to

respond. Basically the north side of Botany Bay is highly degraded as far as

waders are concerned and getting worse each year. If the Port was to go

ahead without compensatory measures it would be the final nail in the coffin

for several species in the Bay (those that only use northern part of the

Bay).

With the large-scale habitat construction proposed by Sydney Ports

Corporation the situation should be greatly improved for these species. The

main thing is to make sure SPC live up to their commitment, extend their

monitoring program to 10 years, provide interpretative facilities for the

public and schools without disturbing the birds, and prepare habitat

elsewhere if the birds don't take to the new habitat. The alternative, 2nd,

site should be identified and assessed before any work commences.

I will include you all in the mailing list when we have prepared a

submission and dot points.
