Hi All,

Townsville has received some good rain in the last few weeks. The water
level at Aplin's Weir, Mundingburra, where I walk most mornings rose from >1
metre below the top to over flowing. This coincided with an almost complete
departure of every single water bird present as well as many terrestrial
species. Even the Pacific Black Ducks that people feed left. All that was
left was a flock of Magpie Geese grazing on a nearby oval.

The proceeding drought had seen an ever increasing number of drought
refugees, mostly Hardheads and Cotton Pygmy-Geese. I assume that they have
moved to the more ephemeral wetlands around the region or possibly to
outback Queensland, where there has been widespread flooding of late.

Tim Dickson
