Hi everyone,

I was up in the Kerang (n. Vic) area over the weekend and managed to have a
look around a few of the haunts.

After getting some excellent directions from Chris Coleborn I headed over to
Hird Swamp to go for Painted Snipe. Some good birds here (Wood Sandpiper,
Marsh Sandpiper, Lathams Snipe, Spotless Crake) but after 2 hours trudging
through the swamp edges I had to concede once again to these elusive birds.
I reckon I flushed one (got a fleeting look at a snipe with a flash of
chestnut on the neck, but not a good enough look to tick it!).

Then over to Johnsons Swamp (White-breasted Woodswallow, Stubble Quail) but
dipped on Aus. Bittern.

Down to Chris' spot near Mt Hope to see if the Aus. Pratincoles were still
there - as soon as I pulled up, there was one Pratincole in the samphire
only 20 metres away (a new bird for me ? finally I had nailed a Pratincole
after dipping on those Orientals 3 times last year!!).
It then flew off after a five minute look, not to return.

I checked out a few other spots - and racked up about 80 species for the
day.

Thanks again, Chris for the assistance,

Cheers,
Greg
