I have to agree with Allan that Barren Grounds is a
truly beautiful place. Many visitors to the Observatory come to see the Eastern
Bristlebird and the Ground Parrot, and the 2024 ha reserve was established in
1956 specifically to protect the habitat of these species. There have been
around 160 other species recorded in the woodland and heathland habitats at
Barren Grounds, but the Southern Emu Wren, Pilotbird, and Beautiful Firetail in
particular attract many birders. The Pilotbirds are common around the
nature study centre, and on most nights this year the ground parrots have been
heard on red-bank gully at about 8.30pm.
Visitors or potential visitors should note that
accomodation for up to 6 people is available in a self-contained cabin
(powered/hot showers/fridge). The cost is $25 per night per person, or $22 for
Birds Australia members.
