Position on the Impact of Development on Native Animals
In line with
WIRES concerns regarding Australian wildlife and it’s needs for habitat in the
proposed development of rural / residential land in the Eurobodalla Shire.
These sub-divisions are
putting threatened and endangered species at risk, the most prominent being the
Yellow Bellied Glider.
WIRES also recognises that,
with or without development, there are complex issues involved in the
management of fauna. These issues present difficult choices for the responsible
stakeholders and, while WIRES has neither authority nor responsibility for
these decisions, we urge those who do to base their actions upon the principles
of:
1)
Minimum possible suffering
and stress to wildlife
2)
Minimisation of interactions
between humans and wildlife which may lead to the stress or injury of either
3)
Retention of the greatest
possible areas of wildlife habitat
4)
Restoration of as much of
these sites as possible to their original state (pre European) supporting as
far as possible, a sustainable population of wildlife species endemic to these
sites.
