Thanks for the info Martin,
The area surrounding my grandfathers property and the property itself has many young, and mature pine trees (plus lots of she oaks around).
Everytime i go down to the property there are Yellow Tails down there and its is a great feeding ground for them.
As much as i debated the point with my grandpa that red tails wouldn't come down this far, he INSISTED that they have been visitors to his property on many ocassions, and my father also backed him up. I've been informed that i have a lot to learn about these things.. : )
I'll get a phone call to check on them if they are sighted down there again.... i'm not sure when the most recent of these sightings would have been....they could be quiet old.
Re the distribution of black-cockatoos in Victoria.
I've just checked the data for these species in the Atlas of Victorian
Wildlife and can advise of the following:
The species is basically restricted to the far west of Victoria.
Specifically from about the Grampians west tyo South Australia There are
some historic/vagrant records of the species from around Camperdown and
near Ballarat but none for the Geelong area or any further east.
This species is restricted to the far EAST of the state. From about Lakes
Entrance to the border. The Atlas has soem old ercords fro the
Starthbogies and the north-east (doubtful??) but no observations for
anything west of Western Port Bay.
This is by far the most common and widespread species of black-cockatoo in
Victoria. I suggest this is what is being seen on the Bellarine Peninsula.
