The other day a friend was getting wood by a dam, and noticed Rainbow Bee-eaters flying down, dipping their beaks into the water, then flying up to a perch, where they banged something against the branch before swallowing. He did not have binoculars to see what they were eating, but, the water where they were dipping was thick with Gambusia, or Mosquito Fish. Is is possible they were fishing? Has anyone heard of these birds taking small fish for food?? Duncan Fraser, Maffra Vic.
