Hi,
I'm in Tannum Sands near Gladstone in Queensland at the moment. While I'm not between Sydney and Taree I thought it was an interesting coincidence that there were no Comb-crested Jacana in their usual haunts in this area either. I checked the places I've found them in the past (near South Trees Inlet and the Boyne Island Conservation Park) and didn't find any. I also missed them on Awoonga Dam but the recent increase in the height of the dam would explain that. My previous trips up here have been at the same time of year as well.
Nick

Since the start of the drought (well at least since the beginning of 2002), I have found the Jacanas to be scarce/absent from their favourite haunts around the Hunter/Central Coast NSW region which includes Collieroy Dam (where they were always easy to see and where several pairs bred regaulary each year. I had about 15 Jacanas here in 2001), Mandalong Swamp near Wyong (where I saw one appearing to be nesting) and Hillville Dam near Taree (to name a few sites) and have not been able to see any since the start of 2002 (though one was seen in Sydney's Lake Parramatta, I think about this time last year). Has anybody been seeing them recently between Sydney and Taree?

Hopefully they will return again in good number as the drought deteriorates.

Edwin Vella
