Hi all,
Yesterday I spent another day in the Capertee Valley (NSW Central
Tablelands) with two British visitors. Highlights included:
- Great views of a Painted Honeyeater at Coco Creek. This site, at the
bridge, was brimming with birdlife.
- Plum-headed Finches, a little more difficult to find but we did catch
brief views of two along the Glen Davis road and one on Crown Station Road.
- Three Turquoise Parrots in the woodland behind my cabin. Also, another
seen by a dam along Port Macquarie Road.
- Brown Songlark still displaying in the paddock in front of my land.
Stubble Quail also heard here.
- White-browed Woodswallows everywhere and nesting. Unfortunately no Masked
seen amongst them.
- Singing Bushlarks at the Goollooinboin gate.
- A Koel heard near Glen Alice.
- A pair of Tawny Frogmouths roosting in a tree beside the Glen Alice church.
- A large flock of Straw-necked Ibis near Glen Alice. On Sunday I counted
about 200 here, but yesterday this number had dropped somewhat. The recent
rain seems to have given rise to large numbers of grasshoppers and I wonder
if this is the reason for the appearance of these ibises. There was an even
larger flock near Rylstone (north of Capertee Valley).
- Good numbers of Little Lorikeets, Rainbow Bee-eaters and Diamond
Firetails at several locations. Rufous Songlarks were in fine voice
everywhere.
The only raptors we saw in the valley were Brown Goshawk, Wedge-tailed
Eagle and a dark morph Little Eagle.
At Rylstone Dam were 55 Hoary-headed Grebes, 10 Great Crested Grebes, 1
Musk Duck, 2 magnificent White-bellied Sea-Eagles, a Pelican and a Dusky
Woodswallow on a nest.
All in all, another fantastic day in and around the valley, despite the
rather hot weather.
Oh, and while walking around on my land trying to get a better look at a
bird, I discovered another dam! That makes three (the agent told me there
were only two). This one is tucked away in the bush and should be a great
bird magnet for the western part of the property.
