g'day all,

Philip Veerman's explanation was excellent.

1
For a bit more background refer to -
Recommended English Names for Australian Birds
The Emu, Volume 77, Supplement, May 1978
which included a section "Style and Conventions" that explains -
- Orthography
- Capital Letters
- Possessive 'S'
- Hyphenation
and includes reasons for some "exceptions to the rule"

In other words there was a tremendous amount of discussion re the current RENs (Recommended English Names)

2
Some interesting discussion re RENs were included in Wingspans
- # 10 June   1993    Towards a New Checklist
- # 11 Sept   1993    Is the tail wagging the dog ?
- # 12 Dec    1993,  The great debate
- # 13 March 1994   Ren or Fairy-wren ?
- # 14 June   1994   Ren - a never ending story.

Regards
