Australian Natural History Medallion

The Australian Natural History Medallion for 2003 will be presented to Dr Clive
Minton at The Field Naturalists Club of Victoria hall at 1 Gardenia Street,
Blackburn at 8:00 pm on Monday 10 November.

The Medallion is awarded each year to the person judged to have made the most
meritorious contribution to the understanding of Australian natural history
during the previous ten years. It was first awarded to Alex Chisholm in 1940
and the list of recipients since then contains many well known names from the
fields of ornithology, botany, entomology, geology, conservation and other
related disciplines.

Clive Minton is a world authority on migrating wading birds who pioneered the
banding of waders in the UK. Since coming to Australia in 1978 he has been
instrumental in advancing the knowledge of the birds, their biology and their
migratory patterns through trapping and banding. He has been guide and mentor
to a generation of enthusiasts who participate in field work in remote
locations. Clive has a large publication record and was the leading scientific
advisor to ?A Year on the Wing? an ABC and Environment Australia documentary
which followed the life of the Eastern Curlew, and had local participants from
each stage of its migratory route. Dr Minton is a Fellow of the Royal
Australasian Ornithologists Union, recipient of the John Hobbs Memorial Medal
and the British Trust for Ornithology Tucker Medal, both awarded for
contributions to ornithology by an amateur. In 2001 he was awarded AM in the
Australia Day Honours ?for service to ornithology, particularly in the study of
migratory wading birds in Australia?.
