I suggested to Joel the possibility of Leaden Flycatcher and Willie Wagtail, but he assures me that it had a black 'bib', and that the general jizz of the bird was like that of a wagtail.
Considering white fronted chats have a black band, i dont think it would have been a chat according to his description.
Not wishing to question the id skills of the observer I just thought I'd
add that the Portland White Wagtail from 1992 was often seen with
White-fronted Chats and blended in with them quite well at times. Could
the Adelaide bird have been a chat?
