Regent Honeyeater at Gunnary TSR

This appears not to have made it the first two times (HTML?)...
On Saturday afternoon I observed at least one and possibly two Regent
Honeyeaters feeding in a flowering white box at Gunnary Travelling Stock
Reserve (TSR) about 13km north east of Boorowa, in the southern Tablelands
of NSW. It was almost a surreal experience seeing a threatened species when
I not expecting it!
A number of other honeyeaters were also feeding in the same tree and these
included Red Wattlebirds, Fuscous Honeyeater and White-plumed Honeyeater.
The different feeding and social behaviours of the conspecifics was
apparent. The Regent Honeyeater was less mobile than the three other
species, feeding in the one patch of flowers for a number of minutes before
moving to another patch. At the same time the Red Wattlebirds and
White-plumed Honeyeaters were observed to be constantly on the move and
constantly harrying one another. The Regent Honeyeaters displayed no
agonistic behaviour toward the other three species, despite on at least two
occasions a Fuscous Honeyeater feeding 'in its face'.
Gunnary TSR is very popular with Canberra birders and has proved to be a
significant patch of box woodland with regular annual sightings of Swift
Parrot during their migration north and in 2002 Painted Honeyeaters were
also observed at Gunnary before their influx into the ACT.
I have emailed a report to David Geering.
