Common Koel

Dear all,

I was in my backyard on Sunday morning (August 3) in the northern suburbs
of Brisbane and heard the unmistakeable call of a Common Koel. It spent
only about a minute making its usual repettive single note call, then went
into a short burst of its more excitable ululating call. Then it stopped. I
did not see the bird. This is either a very early migrant or there is
something out there doing a very good imitation of a Koel. I have noticed
that the resident Koels in our area during the warmer months seem to arrive
relatively late. Each year on Birding-Aus there are numbers of reports of
Koels well down into NSW before our residents move in. Perhaps they winter
further north? I was in Mackay about a month ago and there was a Koel
calling there too, but only one.
Perhaps some of the more northerly contibuters to Birding-Aus could make
some comments on the wintering of this species?

Regards

Greg
