To add to Steve's geese record - I saw two Cape Barren Geese in pasture near
the airstrip on Phillip Island yesterday (Thurs 27/6).

Subject: Geese and Brolgas on the volcanic plain

G'day all

I spent yesterday (Thursday 27/6) visiting some properties on the Victorian
volcanic plain in the Colac, Cressy, Mortlake, Penshurst areas. Not
birding but managed to find two Cape Barren Geese in a roadside paddock
about 5km south of Cressy on the Colac road. Also I heard Brolgas
trumpeting in a paddock near Colac (couldn't see them so don't know how
many) and saw 2 in a paddock west of Hexham.

Re the Geese: Why are they on the mainland in the middle of winter? I
thought that was when they are on their islands to breed.

Cheers

Steve
