Last Saturday week (May 17th) I had a quick visit to Nelson and the Lower
Glenelg National Park in SW Victoria.

While having an afternoon cuppa at Sapling Creek picnic area I was delighted
to observe a Buff-Banded Rail sneaking around the picnic tables. I have only
observed this species on several occasions before and always in just a
fleeting glance as it raced from one piece of cover to the next.

A few moments later this rail was joined by 2 others. All of them came up to
us to glean cake and biscuit crumbs from around our feet. What a delight to
see such normally retiring birds quite unafraid of humans. They have
obviously learned that the arrival of a vehicle means a free feed.
