Hi birders I spent a few days last week roaming around the Cooma area in the NSW Southern Highlands. Avian diversity is not particularly high there (particularly on the cusp of winter), but a couple of sites were interesting. Coornartha Nature Reserve (off the Cooma - Numerella Road) produced Spotted Quail-thrush and a Pink Robin "brown bird", as well as numerous Scarlet Robins, etc. The spot on the Murrumbidgee River near the Cooma water treatment plant turned up Speckled Warbler and Hooded Robin amongst the odd other thing. A private property not far from Coornartha turned up Double-barred Finch and Diamond Firetail together, plus Banded Lapwings nearby - and of surprise to me at least, some feral Pigs! Cheers, Lawrie COOMA AREA - MONARO TABLELAND - NSW SOUTHERN HIGHLANDS. 20-22/5/2003 Lawrie Conole Australian Wood Duck Chenonetta jubata Straw-necked Ibis Threskiornis spinicollis Wedge-tailed Eagle Aquila audax Brown Falcon Falco berigora Eurasian Coot Fulica atra Banded Lapwing Vanellus tricolor Common Bronzewing Phaps chalcoptera Crested Pigeon Ocyphaps lophotes Yellow-tailed Black-Cockatoo Calyptorhynchus funereus Galah Cacatua roseicapilla Sulphur-crested Cockatoo Cacatua galerita Crimson Rosella Platycercus elegans Eastern Rosella Platycercus eximius Red-rumped Parrot Psephotus haematonotus Tawny Frogmouth Podargus strigoides White-throated Treecreeper Cormobates leucophaeus Superb Fairy-wren Malurus cyaneus White-browed Scrubwren Sericornis frontalis Speckled Warbler Chthonicola sagittata Weebill Smicrornis brevirostris Brown Thornbill Acanthiza pusilla Buff-rumped Thornbill Acanthiza reguloides Yellow-rumped Thornbill Acanthiza chrysorrhoa Striated Thornbill Acanthiza lineata Southern Whiteface Aphelocephala leucopsis Red Wattlebird Anthochaera carunculata White-eared Honeyeater Lichenostomus leucotis Brown-headed Honeyeater Melithreptus brevirostris Scarlet Robin Petroica boodang Flame Robin Petroica phoenicea Pink Robin Petroica rodinogaster Hooded Robin Melanodryas cucullata Eastern Yellow Robin Eopsaltria australis Spotted Quail-thrush Cinclosoma punctatum Grey Shrike-thrush Colluricincla harmonica Restless Flycatcher Myiagra inquieta Magpie-lark Grallina cyanoleuca Australian Magpie Gymnorhina tibicen Pied Currawong Strepera graculina Australian Raven Corvus coronoides Little Raven Corvus mellori White-winged Chough Corcorax melanorhamphos Skylark Alauda arvensis Australian Pipit Anthus australis House Sparrow Passer domesticus Double-barred Finch Taeniopygia bichenovii Diamond Firetail Stagonopleura guttata Silvereye Zosterops lateralis Common Starling Sturnus vulgaris Common Wombat Vombatus ursinus Eastern Grey Kangaroo Macropus giganteus Fox Vulpes vulpes Rabbit Oryctolagus cuniculus Pig Sus scrofa Common Eastern Froglet Crinia signifera 55 species -- ================================= Lawrie Conole Senior Ecologist Ornithology & Terrestrial Ecology Ecology Australia Pty.
