Just adding some information from Victoria on when certain butterfliy
species are observed flying.

The following Museum Victoria site allows one to search for a species and
check when it mostly 'on the wing'.

http://flyaqis.mov.vic.gov.au/cgi-bin/texhtml?form=bio_enton

Typing in a species common or scientific name produces a table of frequency of
observation and an associated graph.
