Folks,
Belated information about a few days at Lake Tyers
in Gippsland (about 10 km east of Lakes Entrance) last weekend: nearly 100
species despite devoting time to a range of non-birding activities.
Highlights included
Two fantastic sightings of Azure
Kingfishers
Several observations of White-bellied Sea-Eagles,
including a pair of adult birds homking at each other
A female Spotted Quail-thrush foraging on one of
the picnic tables at the aboriginal heritage display at Burnt Bridge Road (by
the way, Burnt Bridge itself is closed so if you're visiting Lake Tyers don't
expect to be able to drive across)
At least two adult male Satin Bowerbirds along the
rainforest walk off Cherry Tree Track
A pair of Brown Gerygones in a tiny patch of
remnant rainforest near Kalimna jetty immediately west of Lakes
Entrance
A pair of Pied Oystercatchers apparently courting
and mating - unusual given the time of year, based on the field-guides I had
with me.
Most of the ravens around Kalimna, Lakes Entrance
and Lake Tyers Beach were Forest Ravens, which was a bit of a surprise. I
had several good looks and was able to confirm the massive bill, short tail,
deep, strong call and lack of wing-dipping when calling. There were also
Australian Ravens heard calling in the distance at Lake Tyers
Beach.
