Hi all,
I have just come back from a few days field work adjacent to the Little
Desert National Park, Western Victoria (Desert Heath, Mallee, and Yellow Gum
Woodland habitats). Great couple of days with highlights such as Shy
Heathwren, Australian Owlet-nightjar, Spiny cheeked HE and White-browed
Babbler. Unfortunately no Red-tailed Blacks. Also trapped Silky Mouse.
I also saw two Neophema parrots (likely Elegant Parrots) fly over late in the
afternoon and l am certain they were not Blue-winged Parrots - any comments
would be good.
On the way back l noticed a lot of Grey Box and Yellow Gums either in flower or
coming in flower along the roadside along the Wimmera Hwy, south of Mt.
Arapiles to Horsham, and also a large number of trees in flower along the
Western Hwy near Dadswells Bridge. Although l didn't have time to stop and
have a look around anyone heading up that way should check these areas out as
they area likely to be great spots for Swifties, lorikeets and other
honeyeaters this time of year.
A week earlier l was in the far north west of Tassie in search of OBP's and
Blue-winged Parrots. Small flocks of Blue-winged Parrots (30-40 birds) were
recorded. However, this was down from previous BWP counts a couple of years
earlier with flock sizes up to 500-700 birds. Two juvenile OBP's birds were
sighted a week prior to the Easter Break. Should be on the mainland soon if
not already.
Happy birding.
