Hi everyone,
Around September last year, I discovered a pair of breeding Peregrine
Falcons at an 'abandoned' (no longer used) quarry in Toowoomba,
south-eastern Queensland. This is the only known breeding site of Peregrine
Falcons within Toowoomba and last year, all three chicks fledged
successfully. The falcons have probably used this site in previous years as
well. However, now the Council have decided to build an 'International
Garden' there, which is to be a major tourist attraction for the city.
Obviously, this will involve a lot of heavy machinery and disturbance to the
falcons during the development (they also live at the site during the year).
The construction of the gardens will probably begin fairly shortly, and I'm
not sure whether the Council should be made aware of the Peregrine Falcon
breeding site or not. The Peregrines may either continue to breed despite
the interference or relocate and find another breeding site. Therefore, it
is probably not a great issue, but I would still love to hear others
thoughts on the matter.
From Regan.
