Far South Coast (NSW) honeyeaters have been passing through in groups of
20 - 50 for a few weeks now but not in sustained numbers. That is until
yesterday, Mon April 21, when as Carol Probets in the Blue Mtns
witnessed, there was a big move.
Weather was sunny, clear and calm. At my home in Nethercote,between
Merimbula and Eden, from 8.30 till 1 pm, there was a constant northward
stream.
I took two samples during that time.
9.30 - 9.40 there were 460 birds, 50/50 yellow-faced and white-naped
(2760 per hour) plus a group of 60 Red Wattlebirds.
10.30 - 10.45 there were 300 birds, 60/40 yellow-faced to white-naped
(1200 per hour). Also a group of 40 silvereyes.
Numbers did not lessen until 1pm when they stopped.
Today the weather is similar - birds are NIL.
