Hi Kurtis,

Seeing your email made me wonder whether the Brown Goshawk is the most commonly observed Raptor in the Sydney (County of Cumberland) region.

It is certainly so in the city's central northern suburbs where I live.

The following is a summary of my observations for Cumberland since 1st January 1996. This is an arbitrary but, for me, convenient date which also represents a significant period of time.

The lower number represents confirmed sightings and the higher number represents a total for both confirmed and probable sightings where the probability was high that it was the named species.

Osprey 7
Pacific Baza 14-19
Black-shouldered Kite 110-111
Square-tailed Kite 4
Black Kite 1
Whistling Kite 27-28
White-bellied Sea-eagle 45
Spotted Harrier 2
Swamp Harrier 25
Brown Goshawk 160-167
Grey Goshawk 7-8
Collared Sparrowhawk 19-20
Wedge-tailed Eagle 9
Little Eagle 9-11
Brown Falcon 13-15
Australian Hobby 12-13
Black Falcon 1?
Peregrine Falcon 133-138
Nankeen Kestrel 90-94

For people living in other parts of Sydney the relativity between these numbers might change. For example living on the northern beaches would probably lead to increased sightings of Sea-eagles and Whistling Kites, in Hornsby there might be a greater chance of seeing Wedge-tailed Eagles while in the outer western areas there might be more observations of Square-tailed Kites, Spotted Harriers and Brown Falcons.

Hope this is of interest.

Regards, Andy

After looking at my Birds of Prey field guide by Stephen Debus,I realized it was a brown Goshawk.
The Tail trick is correct.
Kurtis.
