Folks,
Couple of sightings on my recent travels around
Melbourne:
Last Wednesday afternoon a scattered flock of about
two dozen Corellas near the corner of Plenty Road and McDonalds Road in South
Morang - of the three birds I saw well enough to identify, two were
Long-billed and one was Little, so not sure what the overall mix in the flock
was.
On both Saturday and Sunday mornings there were
flocks of fifty-sixty Corellas, mostly Long-billed as far as I could see,
foraging on the eastern batter of the Monash Freeway immediately north of the
Princes Highway overpass, 3-4 km east of Dandenong. On the Sunday they
were present at about 8:30 but gone by 9:15 am.
Late last Wednesday afternoon there were three
Tawny Frogmouths roosting peacefully in small eucalypts at the north end of the
Banyule Flats reserve, just in from the roadside parking bays in Banyule
Road.
Last Thursday morning there was a single brown
Flame Robin on the cliff-tops at Daveys Bay, south of Frankston.
On Saturday a Black Falcon was drifting around the
Trig Hill lookout in the Cranbourne Royal Botanic Gardens annexe. At
lunchtime in the picnic area a Southern Brown Bandicoot happily snuffled out
from the sedges and poked around the feet of seven people at one of the picnic
tables, made the most of a bit of cheese some previous picnicker had dropped,
then trudged unconcernedly off into the bush. A great moment.
Pied Currawongs have been heard around Glen Iris
and Glen Waverley over the past couple of weeks, and the Spinebills and Crimson
Rosellas have made their annual autumn return to Glen Waverley. Plenty to
look out for this time of year.
