Jack Krohn mentioned Owlet Nightjars on March 30, I
can?t say whether they ?flock? or not , but in our
experience it isn?t unusual to hear several
individuals flying about calling loudly as they do.
(They quite often seem to give a call or two in the
daytime as well, as they?re resting in their hollows.)
I always think their call sounds like ?Cheer!?, with a
bit of a pulsing quality to it.
If you were to locate the hollows in the Glen Iris
(Melb.) Red Gums and keep an eye on those on sunny
days, you may well see the O.N.Js ? they seem
irresistibly drawn to sunbathe on nice days at the
entrance to their lodgings.
They don?t seem too fussy about size, shape or
position of hollow either, we?ve even known one to use
an horizontal length of metal pipe!
I wonder whether your O.N.J?s might be being drawn to
an abundance of bugs , in the Gums, for example?
