Bowerbirds are a well-known group of birds that use objects to 'decorate' physical structures that they build for display purposes to attract a mate/s (well, most species within the family anyway). I am interested in knowing of other groups of birds (or individual species) that do something similar, which may include simply displaying with an object held in the bill (such as what Superb Fairy-Wrens may do when soliciting extra-pair copulations, or Great Crested Grebes in a mutual courtship display, or Adelie and Gentoo penguins with rocks that will become so-called nesting material). So, basically I am interested in birds (from anywhere in the world!) that use objects in some form as part of their display for mate attraction (other than bowerbirds). Particularly objects that have nothing to do with building a nest. I welcome any information that people could provide. I also welcome naming of species/bird groups that build (or modify) display structures (such as lyrebird display mounds, cleared display sites of some birds of paradise and cotingas, cock-of-the-rock etc) from which to display. Please reply direct to

Cheers, Dean
