I was priveleged to spend three days on Codfish Island last October as a guest of the NZ Department of Conservation. In the company of researchers, we tracked down three birds for weighing and health checks. They were every bit as wonderful as I had been led to believe, and the people working on them are doing a superb job.
The threats to release stoats are not anonymous necessarily. There is one individual in particular who is not particularly of sound mind and is threatening to do just that. It's worth noting that possums were abundant on Codfish also but they, along with polynesian rats, were eliminated after intensive programs, which may have alot to do with last summer's successful season.

Anonymous threats to release stoats on Codfish Island (where Kakapo recently bred) and other NZ sancturay islands have been made by deer hunters in revenge against plans by Dept of Conservation and Forest and Bird NZ to eliminate introduced deer from sensitive areas.  A claim that possums have already been released on Kapiti island is supected to be a hoax but is being investigated.
